He was still not 18 years old when he joined his first ship the City of Florence at Newport docks in South Wales. William had a fairly gentle start to his career when his ship was employed in moving equipment and stores to the French coastal ports on behalf of the B.E.F.

His ship played a small part in the last of the evacuations from Brest, leaving the port barely a day before the German Army arrived. William`s first ocean convoy lost ships not long after the convoys departure from Scotland and it was his first taste of the Battle of the Atlantic. All his subsequent convoys are in the narrative along with the photos of the ships lost and the ships he sailed with. The famous WW2 ports and anchorages the ships visited include Halifax Nova Scotia, Freetown Sierra Leone and of course Milford Haven and Loch Ewe in Great Britain and are all mentioned in the book.

The Canadian Navy corvettes, the backbone of the convoy escorts especially in the Atlantic are credited with their work and courage. The story later tells of life after the war when my father became a Preston Borough policeman before his sad and premature death in 1967 at only 45 years old.
